This course will focus on selected short stories of the English-speaking world. As the literary form of the short story originates in the USA we will start reading  one or two exemplary stories by early American authors and then aim at more modern stories by various other authors from the British Commonwealth and Britain herself. We will analyse the structural features, narrative strategies, point of views , suspense-building and various thematic motifs. Having a close look at the political and historical backgrounds of the story-making might in some cases contribute to a better understanding. The discussion in class will be helped by various handouts with useful literary terms (and grammatical phenomena, if necessary).
